  • 4-6 matjes herring fillets
  • 2 fresh rolls Kaiser rolls or similar
  • 1 red onion thinly sliced
  • 2-3 pickles optional
  • Butter or mustard optional
  • Fresh dill or parsley optional
  • Lemon wedges optional

Instructions
 

  • Drain and slice the matjes herring fillets.
  • Slice the red onion thinly, and soak in water if desired.
  • Slice the rolls and spread with butter or mustard if desired.
  • Assemble the sandwich by placing the herring on the bottom of the rolls, followed by onions, pickles, and fresh herbs.
  • Squeeze lemon juice on top before serving.

Notes

  • For a milder taste, rinse the herring fillets.
